The hydraulic marine gear engages smoothly in both forward and reverse. The compact and durable design of the gear makes the PRM280 a reliable power transmission.

PRM Newage introduced the 280D model as a direct replacement for the 260D model. While the gear ratios and connections remain the same, the 280D has increased power handling and has also been redesigned to allow for the installation of a power take-off (PTO).

The PRM280 gearbox is designed for use in both recreational and commercial boats. Its twin-shaft design features separate, identical, hydraulically operated multi-plate clutch packs (which do not require adjustment) for forward and reverse drive, allowing full rated power to be continuously transmitted in either direction. The gear ratio is 1.96:1, and the gearbox can operate in either a left- or right-hand rotation. This makes the PRM280 particularly well-suited for twin-engine installations.

The gearbox housing is made of high-quality cast iron, reinforced on the inside, and consists of two separate halves for easy maintenance. The oil pump and directional valves are mounted externally for easy access.

The gearbox has a maximum power rating of 22 kW (29.5 hp) at 1000 rpm. Otherwise, the power rating depends on the engine power and maximum rpm. See the table for rated power values under different operating conditions.

The PRM280 hydraulic gearbox operates on standard lubricating oil. The gearbox responds quickly to movements of the drive lever, ensuring good boat handling.

The robust and reliable hydraulic system is equipped with a mechanical locking device for added safety, so the boat can be safely returned to port if the hydraulics fail.
